Born 1968, Parramatta NSW My mother is fifth generation Australian and my father a Torres Strait Islander. I grew up knowing I was Islander, but since I was raised by my mother, I had no knowledge of my Indigenous heritage or its culture. I express my own identity through painting, which reflects personal experiences and depict surroundings of my environment through the use of colour and design. The inspiration for this painting began when purchasing a box of children’s crayons. In the pack was a pair of Chroma Depth 3D glasses, the cardboard type given to viewers of 3D movies. I discovered the glasses could be ordered in large numbers, and from this developed the idea of painting around the 3D concept. It reminded me of when I went to my first 3D movie, The House of Wax, with my mum when I was a teenager. I was attracted by the idea of the additional impact 3D glasses would offer. Everyone is visually stimulated by 3D and I wanted my work to be unique because of that. It requires the use of colour in a different way to that in which artists are conventionally trained. Although the painting has heightened impact and increased depth with the 3D glasses, the work also stands on its own.
Bubbles & Barnacles ∙ 72 x 42 ∙ acrylic, gloss, sand and medium impasto on linen ∙ $8,500 The painting Bubbles to Barnacles is based upon the markings of a whale shark. |
