Art Storage Conditions

Clients often ask us “how do I store my art?”  While there is a range of appropriate conditions for art storage, the environment certainly can impact art.  Since most people do not want to hide works in a climate controlled vault, following are some practical guidelines.

Traditionally, museums kept the climate at a firm 70 degrees, with relative humidity at 50%.  A team of conservation analysts affiliated with the Smithsonian (“The Torch”, 12/’94) are now saying safe conservation guidelines allow for a 15% fluctuation in humidity.  Ideal temperatures range from 50 – 70 degrees.

Different materials need different care.  Paper and textiles fade in direct light.  UV-protective glass guards against strong sun or lamplight.  Paper molds and wrinkles more than linen.  Watercolor collectors might consider running air conditioning for at least a portion of every day, to dehumidify the environment.  Not all sculpture has the appropriate patina for staying outside in nature’s elements – it’s best to inquire before placing your new piece in a garden display.
