Resort Art

Resorts tend to be beautiful places.  Some of the most significant movements in art have been inspired by artists gathering in places of beauty to create.  Think of the Barbizon and Hudson River Schools.

In Massachusetts alone, the Cape Ann School, Provincetown and Nantucket have attracted significant artists through the years.  Emile Gruppe was one of the most notable Cape Ann artists, Provincetown has drawn artists such as Mark Rothko and Milton Avery, and Nantucket has been home to George Inness, Eastman Johnson and William F. Macy.

A thriving art colony attracts many artists of varying abilities and styles.  A painting purchased at a resort can be a memento and/or a cornerstone of a collection.  As always, the same guidelines apply when purchasing art.

  • Learn about your market.
  • Ask questions.
  • Know what you are buying: Can the scene be located?  Was/Is the artist trained?  Self-taught?
  • Talk, learn, and look at the art that is on the market.
  • Most importantly, buy what moves you.
