"I think most peoples' feelings regarding having their portrait painted, if they have thought about it at all, are often mixed.  Usually they assume it has to be extremely formal, or they could just have their photograph taken instead.  But like most things, actually experiencing it tends to change the initial perception. A painting can be done in many different ways, and it evolves during the sittings through the interaction with the sitter.  Painting a portrait is not worthwhile because it is "a time honored tradition", but because the experience and resulting painting can offer us a different perspective on ourselves."

Brandon Soloff is an oil painter who has a significant history with portraiture, despite his relatively young age. He was born in New York City, though was raised in places as various as Mexico City, Chicago and Boston.

At 18 years of age, Soloff he moved to Florence, Italy for three years to study with Charles H. Cecil. While in Italy, he began accepting portrait commissions in Italy, Germany, Austria, and England, which had the added benefit of allowing him to travel extensively and visit many of Europe’s finest museums. After Florence he continued his studies with D. Jeffrey Mims for two years in Southern Pines, North Carolina. Soloff also apprenticed with Benjamin Long for the duration of the Transamerica Fresco Dome Project in Charlotte, N.C., and studied sculpture with Martine Vaugel in both North Carolina and France.

Soloff’s varied teaching experience includes the Charles H. Cecil Studios, The Vaugel Sculpture Studio, the Washington Art Association, and a small studio he co-founded, Studio 126.

Paramount to Brandon Soloff’s development as a painter has been his teachers’ sharing their love of art. He credits their instruction with helping him learn about the craft and culture of painting which he now pursues on his own. Currently, Soloff divides his time between his studio and Studio 126, where he teaches amongst other distinguished artists.
