Dennis Cheaney is a talented draftsman and painter whose main artistic interests are in depicting the varied shapes of natural forms and the exact quality of light. Working only from life, Dennis creates still lifes, portraits, and figures. He credits his primary teacher and mentor, the eminent artist and portraitist, Ted Seth Jacobs, with fostering his understanding of long-held artistic principles.

In 2003, Dennis established the New England Realist Art Center in Boston, with the primary aim to ensure that traditional practices of drawing and painting remain a vital art form in a contemporary culture. He serves as principal instructor offering on-going classes and intensive figure workshops.

Dennis has studied with some of today’s most respected artists such as Jacob Collins, Michael Grimaldi, Randy Melick and Ted Schmidt. In 2000, he was awarded the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant for figure painting. He received his BA in Mathematics from the University of Southern California (1995) and his MFA from the New York Academy of Art (1998), where he was an Andy Warhol Foundation Scholar. Dennis’ interest in studying natural patterns that lead him to mathematics continues to inform his work as an artist.
