Daniel Greene

The paintings and pastels of Daniel E. Greene hang in more than 500 public and private collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. He has taught at the Art Students League and at The National Academy of Design. Mr. Greene is the author of two definitive books, Pastel and The Art of Pastel which have been translated into eight languages. In 2001 the Portrait Society of America presented Daniel E. Greene with the Medal of Honor for his distinguished body of work. In 1999, he was awarded The Artists Fellowship Benjamin West Clinedinst medal for the achievement of exceptional artistic merit. In 1995, the American Society of Portrait Artists honored Greene with the John Singer Sargent Award for life-long dedication to the achievement of excellence in portraiture. In 1992, American Artists magazine honored him with its first Lifetime Achievement Award in the category of oil painting and the Oil Painters of America Society named him to their Hall of Fame. The Encyclopedia Britannica considers Mr. Greene the foremost pastelist in the United States and in 1983, the Pastel Society of America elected him to the Pastel Hall of Fame, making him the first living artist so honored.

Mr. Greene has been the featured artist in American Artist Magazine 15 times. Articles about his work have appeared eight times in The Artist’s Magazine. Favorable reviews have appeared in three times in ARTnews Magazine. In February 1999, Mr. Greene’s paintings were featured in a cover article of The International Artist Magazine. In 1998, Daniel Greene was interviewed in the Academy Award nominated documentary “Ayn Rand, A Sense of Life” and was recently the subject of the cable documentary “The Genuine Article”.

Greene’s portrait subjects have included leaders of government, banking, education and industry: First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, Author Ayn Rand, Astronaut Walter Schirra, Publisher William Randolph Hearst, Wendy’s founder Dave Thomas, Governors Fob James of Alabama, Paul Laxalt of Nevada, Herbert Lehman of New York, Robert Scott of North Carolina, and Gerald Beliles of Virginia, Secretary of the Army Martin Hoffman, Superintendent of West Point General Sidney Berry, Commentator Rush Limbaugh, and Bryant Gumbel of CBS. A partial list of portrait commissions includes the Chairman of the Boards of Honeywell, Coca-Cola Company, Dupont Corporation, American Express, The New York Stock Exchange, and IBM. Mr. Greene has also painted the Deans and Presidents of: Tufts, Duke, Columbia, North Carolina, West Point, Delaware, New York, Princeton, Rutgers, Yale, and Harvard Universities.
