Evelyn McFarlane

Evelyn Ann McFarlane

As an architect and painter, I have always found my inspiration in the Renaissance and have admired modern artists who have been able to abstract the beauty of the forms found in that period and express it in their own work.  As a student of architecture, I made my first trip to Italy  on a study program which focused on the work of Palladio, who successfully combined architecture with art and sculpture.

My love of Italy has since endured and I have found inspiration here for the last twelve years.  In my work I strive to represent all the aspects of nature that are found in its inherent beauty:  the forms, rhythms, light, richness of color and texture.   And just as the masters managed to ennoble their objects, I too strive and hope to capture the nobleness of even the most simple of forms.  I paint only from nature in both still lives and landscape, and continue to try to represent nature in its infinite manifestations.

Evelyn McFarlane is an architect, painter, and mother,  living and working in Florence, Italy.  She was born in Brooklyn N.Y., and was raised on Long Island and in San Diego.   She returned to the East Coast to attend the architecture school at Cornell University, and graduated in 1985.  She got her first job as an architect in Cambridge, Massachusetts and then continued her career in New York City.  She then taught at Syracuse University in the School of Architecture both in Syracuse, NY and in Florence, where she finally got back into her life-long love of drawing and painting.

In 1996, she decided to follow her heart into a career in painting and began her studies of drawing and painting at the studios of the Florence Academy of Art, under the direction of Daniel Graves.  After three years, she began painting in her own studio and has resided in Florence ever since.  Her passions are art and architecture of the renaissance and she lectures on architecture and drawing for various programs in Florence.  McFarlane is also a co-author of a series of books entitled, ‘If.... Questions for the Game of Life’.  She has sold work through galleries in Italy and the United States, as well as to private collectors.
