Jan Brough Whether painting the landscape, a still life or figure, Jan's goal is to capture
the striking beauty of light on objects. Paintings by Jan Brough, one of the “Vermont Luminists”, are distinguished by her romantic, classical approach to oil painting. Whether developing a portrait, still life or landscape, her goal is to capture the effects of light on the subjects of her work. When painting the splendor of the landscape, she prefers working en plein-air. Painting outside in the early morning or at the end of the day enables her to capture the strongest light effects and dramatic atmosphere. When painting a still life in her studio, she controls light through the windows to achieve the desired “light effect” that is the objective. Jan has studied at the Art Students League in New York City, and for many years studied with noted American painter Frank Mason, who has taught over 50 years at the League. His teacher, Frank Dumond, was a principal painter at the Lyme Art Colony, early in this century. The followers of this discipline of classical instruction in this country have developed into a very highly regarded group of artists. From this classical training, she learned not only the techniques of classical oil painting, but also the value of the materials used in painting. Jan mixes her own gesso from fine Italian chalks. She uses quality oil paints and mixes her own from dry color, sometimes using them for final glazing on a painting. Jan has shown her work in numerous juried National competitions and is
represented in galleries in Vermont and throughout New England. |
