When it came ‘time’ for Alfhild to marry,
her father created a series of increasingly
difficult competitions for her suitors.
The winning suitor, Prince Alf, managed
to slay the two serpents outside of her
door in order to gain entrance to her
chamber and to win her hand in marriage.
Alfhild evaded the arranged marriage
by disguising herself as a man, escaping
through the window, and taking to the sea
with a female crew. A passing pirate ship
elected her captain and together they
menaced the Danish coast. Years later,
Prince Alf captured the lawless ship
and unmasked its leader. He proposed
marriage on the spot. This time she accepted. |
