Joyce Washor

I paint solely out of love.

I have been drawn to making art since finger-painting days in a Brooklyn kindergarten class. When miniature painting found me as a result of a shoulder
injury I truly found myself as a painter. I found I could actually see in a way I had not experienced previously. Everything that I had ever learned suddenly made sense to me.

As in my meditation practice which quiets the mind to a one-pointed stillness, downsizing my imagery zeroes in on the essence of the work itself. Always having been a representational painter my intention was to translate a three dimensional world into a two dimensional surface. I now learned concisely which color choices would successfully depict space, texture and light.

Miniature paintings are by their very nature intimate and unpretentious yet can have great carrying power. They contain the same elements that make any good painting captivating; composition, color and brushwork. Even though the work is small the concepts can be big. As my work has matured I have found the process to be a humbling experience. Paradoxically, painting in miniature maximized the magical process of creation enabling me to paint with utter faith and enthusiasm.
