Sallie Scruggs
Sallie Scruggs specializes
in realistic, figurative work cast in bronze. While she has a great talent
for portraying the realistic likenesses and traits of her subjects, she
emphasizes that her “sketches” or “portraits” strive
to capture the essence or expressive qualities of the person.
At twelve years of age, Sallie began studying with Hans Schuler at
the Schuler School of Fine Arts in Baltimore, Maryland, their youngest
student. She received her Bachelors Degree from Liberty Baptist College
in Lynchburg, Virginia and her Fine Arts Degree from Schuler. She also
began playing piano at the age of three and has performed with the
Greater Baltimore Symphony Youth Orchestra.
Her work is displayed in the collections of Seward Johnson, David
and Barbara Beinecke Spitler, and the Anne Arundel Historical Society
of Maryland, among others. She is a past recipient of the Liz Schaeffler
sculpture show. She has also served as a sculpture instructor for the
Nantucket Community School.
A large representation of Sallie’s work was recently featured
at the Nantucket Arts Council’s Arts Festival of 2002. With her
husband, Guy, she is a year-round resident of Nantucket.
