William Welch

William Welch is a familiar sight on Nantucket, popping up on sunny streets with his easel and baseball cap. His paintings feature sun-dappled houses, streets, and gardens. Colorful and romantic, flowers and flags nod and wave on a seemingly eternal sunny morning. His works in oil demonstrate a concern with light and color, a softness of line, and an emphasis on brushstroke.

Describing himself as an “academic impressionist”, Welch has made extensive study into the impressionist movement, seeking out locales with exquisite light and atmosphere. From miniature watercolor scenes of extremely fine detail to large and expressive oil paintings, Welch’s style is filled with the romance, color and light of the true impressionist’s spirit and passion. He travels extensively to paint and teach up and down the eastern seaboard and throughout France, Portugal, and Italy.

William Welch received his art education at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio with graduate study in painting at the Philadelphia College of Art. He developed his love and skill in watercolors under the able instruction of prominent American watercolorists such as Dom DeStephano and Pearl Svobodian. Welch works in all media of painting and drawing, but concentrates on “plein-air” [outdoor] painting in oils and watercolors.

Welch has been awarded many honors in his career. Most recently, he has been featured in the book “The Best in Oil Painting” and is a recognized contributor to the US State Department’s “Art in Embassies Program”. Both President Clinton and Secretary Warren Christopher have honored the artist. Welch has been accepted into the archives of the Claude Monet Foundation of France. The artist is represented in personal and corporate art collections both nationally and internationally, and is a member of the Copley Society of Boston, the Philadelphia Water Color Club, and the National Watercolor Society.
